Détail du cours/stage

1. Making ceramic objects using the coloured clay inlay technique known as Nerikomi.

2. Medium: Stoneware clay / porcelain clay / ceramic stains / transparent glaze.

3. Course description: Nerikomi was first created in Japan and involves stacking, cutting, and inlaying coloured pieces of clay to form different patterns. Using various coloured stoneware or porcelain clays, ceramic objects are made by hand-building or forming on a mould.

4. Course objectives: To learn the process of making ceramic objects using the coloured clay inlay technique known as Nerikomi or Neriage.

  • Structure of course: 8 weeks

    • Session 1: Mixing coloured clay to prepare for making.
      Introduction to Nerikomi examples and how they were made.

    • Session 2: Continue mixing colours if not finished. Preparing slabs to make inlaid bowls or plates. Exploring how to design patterns using coloured clay inlays.

    • Session 3: Making coloured blocks. Preparing slabs for bowls, plates, or cylinders.

    • Session 4: Making objects.

    • Session 5: Making objects.

    • Session 6: Preparing pieces for bisque firing.

    • Session 7: Sanding and smoothing bisque-fired pieces.

    • Session 8: Glazing finished pieces.
